Chapter 3: Surah Al-Imran (the Family of Amran): Verses 187-188

Translation

[Remember] when God took a pledge from the people who received previous revelations: make this known to mankind, explain it, and do not conceal any of it. But they failed to keep their pledge—they bartered the revelations for small gains in this world, and it was an evil exchange.227

Be wary of those who pride themselves in what they have contrived and take pleasures in being praised for things they have not done. Do not think they will be safe from God’s judgment. There awaits for them a painful chastisement (as a consequence of their actions).228

 Interpretation

227. All people of faith whose foundation of faith is based on revelations from God through prophets are bound by a pledge to (1) continue to further the dissemination of knowledge and practical guidance contained in the revelations and (2) follow the guidance themselves first and then to establish it in their own societies. While many of the early Muslims understood the significance of this pledge and demonstrated a commitment to the Qur’an and the Prophet in a manner that is unprecedented in human history (there have been exceptions, of course), the current Muslims have fallen victims to the same misguidance that affected the followers of the previous revelations. There has been a rise of so-called imams, sheikhs, scholars, and leaders who provide lip service to religion only to deceive people, seek material gains for themselves, and claim undeserved fame, in no measure different than the rabbis and clergies (people of books) as Qur’an confirms and as we know from past and recent history.

228. The tendency to pride ourselves and take credit for work done by others and to be credited for work not done in any meaningful way or as a showcase has characterized many of the self-proclaimed religious leaders in various religions in the world and political leaders in many countries. God reminds us all that while some of these people are able to fool their communities and achieve small gains in this life, in the end God will judge them, and they will be subject to appropriate consequences for their actions, no matter how safe and protected they might feel. The accusations against Jesus by high priests is a stark example of such conduct as is also evident in our recent histories, where religious and political leaders use religions or specific ideologies to further their personal gains and to control people.

REFLECTION

Being true to God and to His revelations can only happen through learning and living such guidance in one’s life and through concerted effort and collaboration from many members of the societies who are driven by a shared vision and a common desire to be good and to bring peace and justice for all.

ACTION

Self-examination as to our understanding of God’s revelations and our actions that stem from such understanding is critically important to ensure that we are true in our intent and true to the message as we implement it in our lives and in our societies.
